Santa Barbara, Calif. – The University of Akron will play for the NCAA Championship for a second consecutive season this Sunday after beating the Michigan Wolverines 2-1 in Friday evening’s semifinal.
It’s a big deal, but you wouldn’t know it from talking to the Zips. This is well-worn territory for head coach Caleb Porter and his players having been the championship last year; the Ohioans are all business ahead of Sunday’s final.
“In order to win the national championship and in order to make it as far as we have, you have to truly believe you’re going to be there,” Porter said. “We’re not surprised. We’re very grounded and very humble, but we know we have to do well to win on Sunday. We expected to be in the national championship.”
Friday was the second meeting between Akron and Michigan. The Zips had handed the Wolverines a 7-1 shellacking back on October 19th, but were careful not to underestimate their opposition on Friday night.
“I give credit to Michigan,” Porter said. “Coach Burns and his staff did a great job with that team. I have seen a great transformation since the first time we played them 10 games ago. They gave us a good battle.”
