Everyone is excited for the 19th world cup football tournament to be held next year. The world cup 2010 is scheduled to be held in South Africa between 11 June and 11 July. What further ad to the excitement of the Africans is that it will be the first time their country would be hosting the event.

It is believed that five new stadiums are going to be built especially for the tournament. Out of which three stadiums will be introduced as new match venue and other two will be used as practice ground. Not only this, the African sport board also planning to upgrade five existing venues. The total construction cost is expected to reach R8.4bn.

Apart from upgrading and building new stadium, South Africa is also planning to improve the infrastructure of its many cities. The government is mainly aiming to improve the public transport system within the city. The government has implemented many projects that include the Gautrain and new Bus Rapid Transit system (BRT) titled Rea Vaya.  In an exclusive interview of Danny Jordan, the president of the World cup 2010, Danny Jordan said that he expects the stadiums to be upgraded by the end of October 2009.

The country is going to leave no stone unturned to make sure that everything goes well during the world cup 2010. It has taken strong measures to ensure the safety of local and international tourists who would be flying in Africa to attend the matches. The Government has also taken many steps in accordance with the FIFA requirements.

As with every big event, this too is surrounded by controversies. It has been reported that about 70,000 workers walked off their jobs on 8 July 2009. The government claims that it pays R2500 to its workers but there are alleged reports that the workers are grossly underpaid. However, the government has assured that the stadiums will be ready on time.
