How much you want to compare Bayern Munich’s 2-1 victory Tuesday in the first leg of the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League quarterfinals against Manchester United to the 1999 competition final, which saw the scoreline reversed is a matter of personal choice.
Though the result played out much like the 1999 version, when Manchester United scored twice in second half stoppage time to stun the Bavarians for one of the sport’s most famous all-time results, the stakes this time around weren’t nearly as high. This was, after all, only the first leg of a quarterfinal.
Still, the comparisons will certainly be made over the next 24 hours, at least in Germany.
