WASHINGTON, DC - At 37 years of age and nearly four years after retiring from senior international play, Brian McBride still has the skills and temperament that made him an automatic selection as the national team’s target forward for a decade and catapulted him to near-legend status with fans in both the U.S. and West London.
Coming off the bench for the Chicago Fire last Saturday in Washington, McBride set up Marco Pappa’s 80th-minute game-winner with a quick and intelligent flick with his heel. McBride then buried D.C. with an ambitious header that beat United goalkeeper Troy Perkins to his near post. The display left us wondering whether McBride’s national team retirement (especially considering the current injury glut up front) came too soon. It also was a good sign for a revamped club that McBride is counting on to deliver his first league championship.
