Seattle Sounders Sign Uruguay’s Alvaro Fernandez

The Seattle Sounders have announced the long-rumored signing of Uruguayan national team midfielder Alvaro Fernández, who played in four games during La Celeste’s run to the semifinals.

Fernández will be the club’s third Designated Player after Swedish midfielder Henrik Ljungberg and Swiss striker Blaise Nkufo, although the former may not be in the Emerald City for long. Fernández has considerable range, is just 24 years old and could be considered Ljungberg’s replacement.

HOUSTON (AP) — Manchester United turned the Major League Soccer All-Star game into its own showcase of talent.

Federico Macheda had two early goals, Mexican star Javier Hernandez scored in his debut for the Red Devils, and Manchester United routed the MLS All-Stars 5-2 on Wednesday night in the final exhibition game of its North American tour.

Darron Gibson and Tom Cleverley added goals for the Red Devils, tuning up for the start of the Premier League season next month.

Don Garber: MLS Will Retain Conference Structure Next Year

All the single-table fanatics who insist that Major League Soccer is not a genuine “football” competition because of its two conference setup are going to have to wait a little longer, according to commissioner Don Garber, who confirmed Tuesday that the league’s 18 teams will continue to be divided into East and West when Portland and Vancouver come aboard next season.

There had been some speculation that the addition of two teams West Coast teams, and the league’s growing sympathy for those who pine for a “traditional” structure, might force a rethink. It hasn’t.

“We will retain a conference system and we will move 2 teams from the West to East, and we’ll announce those changes towards the end of the year,” Garber wrote in an online chat with USA Today ahead of Wednesday’s All-Star Game in Houston.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the veteran Manchester United manager who arguably is the dean of world soccer coaches, said Monday afternoon that the U.S. Soccer Federation should rush to sign coach Bob Bradley to a new deal.

Speaking in Houston ahead of Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game, which will pit United against the league’s top players, Ferguson said, “I think [Bradley] did a fantastic job and I am surprised the USA have not sprinted to his house and given him a new contract.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Davy Arnaud and Kei Kamara scored first-half goals and the Kansas City Wizards beat Manchester United 2-1 Sunday in front of the largest crowd to see a soccer match in Kansas City.

A crowd of 52,342, the biggest for Manchester United on its North American tour so far — eclipsed the 37,319 who witnessed a World Cup qualifier here in 2001.

The crowd may have also been drawn partly out of curiosity to see the newly renovated Arrowhead Stadium, which was hosting its first event after a $325 million makeover.

Backup goalkeeper Eric Kronberg replaced Jimmy Nielsen at halftime and made five saves for the Wizards, who have not won an MLS title since 2000 and are 4-8-4 this season.

In the 11th minute, Arnaud beat United’s offside trap and took a well-placed through ball from Kei Kamara. Given the one-on-one against backup keeper Ben Amos, Arnaud dribbled into the penalty area and calmly slotted the ball into the lower left corner.

Dimitar Berbatov equalized from the penalty spot in the 41st minute after defender Jimmy Conrad was sent off for a sliding tackle on him.
