The architect of the Salvadoran national team that took the lead in both World Cup qualifiers against the United States last year has been named as the new head coach of the Chicago Fire. Carlos de los Cobos, a Mexican, has no experience in MLS and didn’t feel comfortable speaking English at his unveiling on Monday afternoon.
But he clearly has a knack for troubling American opponents. Los Cuscatlecos’ surprising qualification for last year’s CONCACAF Hexagonal — and their spirited performances against the U.S. — obviously convinced the Fire that it was worth taking a chance on a foreign coach.
