He’s still one of the world’s top keepers, at his age (39). So, he’ll be about 40 by the time the world cup comes along. Netherlands is relying on others as well, (Timmer, Stekelenburg, etc.) but none really match up to him. In ‘82 Italy won with the 40 year old Dino Zoff in goal as starter. Can it happen?

Yes it can happen. Goalies often get better with age. Ideal age for a goalie is 30ish…where as a striker has probably retired by then. Van Der Saar will probably be the starter for Holland.
