PHILADELPHIA — There probably was a point on Saturday where the old Landon Donovan would have gotten frustrated and withdrawn. Confidence would be lost. It certainly was frustrating watching him in the first half against Turkey at Lincoln Financial Field.
Donovan lined up at right midfield like he did during his loan at Everton, but pretty much abandoned the position minutes into the game. He seemed to decide relatively early that he wasn’t going to see much of the ball there, so he pinched in toward the middle and stayed. That decision caused myriad problems, the most obvious being that now Donovan most certainly wouldn’t get the ball out on the flank.
