A funny thing happened after the opening whistle sounded to start the 2009-10 FA Cup final between Chelsea and Portsmouth at London’s Wembley Stadium.
All the talk about debts and money quickly flew out the window and a pretty good, if not bizarre, game broke out between the recently crowned Premier League champion Blues and long-since relegated Pompey.
Despite a dogged effort — and some major assists from the goal frame — by Portsmouth, one of world soccer’s greatest truths shined through: It’s Didier Drogba’s world, we’re all just living in it.
The Ivorian striker’s 59th minute goal from a free kick was enough for Chelsea to win 1-0, completing the 11th domestic League and Cup double in English soccer history.
