When the years pass the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola will, unfortunately, likely be remembered for the horrific attack on the Togo national team’s bus by rebels in Cabinda on Jan. 9. At the time many called for the tournament to be abandoned after Togo withdrew. (Amazingly, Togo has been suspended for the next two tournaments because of “government interference.”)
Egypt are certainly trilled the tournament went on the rest of the way without a hitch, nobody more than little known substitute Mohamed Nagy who is better known to the world as “Gedo.” Sunday in Luanda the Pharaohs won their third consecutive tournament and record seventh overall thanks to a 85th minute goal from Gedo that propelled Egypt past an upstart Ghana squad 1-0.
