MLS players who wish clubs had total autonomy and American fans who worship at the altar of English soccer would be wise to follow the sad saga of Portsmouth Football Club, which may be sacrificed on that same altar next week in an object lesson on financial excess and a lack of competitiveness in the world’s biggest leagues.
Major League Soccer announced late Thursday that negotiations with the players union regarding a new collective bargaining agreement have been extended again. Today (Friday), was the second deadline, but because of the record-breaking snowstorms that pummeled the Mid-Atlantic this week, the parties agreed to push it back to Feb. 25 and to continue talking over the next two weeks.
