The Los Angeles Galaxy were the best team in Major League Soccer this season, but they were undone on Sunday night by a team that played the perfect game.
Led by goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and playmaker David Ferreira, FC Dallas was clinical and ruthless in its 3-0 destruction of the top-seeded Galaxy in the Western Conference Final. As a result, MLS will have a first-time champion next weekend as Dallas and the Colorado Rapids — two clubs that have difficulty commanding attention in their home towns — meet for the league title in Toronto.
The Galaxy (20-8-5), MLS Cup runners-up in 2009, were outstanding in their two playoff games against Seattle. Organized, professional and efficient, they looked like a team destined to make amends for last year’s loss in the final.
