Taylor Twellman’s two-year battle with concussion symptoms ended Wednesday afternoon at a poignant press conference in Foxborough, where the former MLS MVP walked away from the game because “When you’re told if you want to live your life and be healthy, then soccer needs to stop, then the decision is made for you.”
The St. Louis native and son of a former pro (and grandson of of a baseball player) leaves the New England Revolution with plenty of accolades. The 2005 MVP award highlights an eight-season career in which he scored 111 goals in league play. He stands sixth all time on the regular season scorers list (101) and reached the century mark in just 174 games — a record. Only three came from the penalty spot.
His composure and vision in the penalty area was second to none. Twellman was always in the right place at the right time, and was ruthless with the ball in the air or at his feet.
