Congratulations to Thomas Dooley and Preki, who were named to the National Soccer Hall of Fame late Thursday night for their stellar play with the U.S. national team and in MLS. Both clearly are deserving, and I supported their induction when I cast my ballot a couple of months ago.
The problem is that Dooley and Preki constitute the entire 2010 class. It’s good for a hall of fame — every hall of fame — to have high standards. It’s even better if those standards are consistent and well understood. But as a voter, I believe that many of my colleagues (117 of us had the honor of casting ballots this year) are ignoring a specific group of players whose contributions to the growth of American soccer should be more celebrated.
