although ITALY won the last FIFA World Cup in 2006, they did not qualify for the next FIFA World Cup automatically. instead, they have to play in the qualifiers to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals as the FIFA World Cup champions did not qualify for the next tournament automatically.
ITALY have been drawn in Group 8 of the 2010 FIFA World Cup European zone along with REPUBLIC OF IRELAND, BULGARIA, CYPRUS, GEORGIA & MONTENEGRO. they are currently sits at the top of the standings in their qualifying group & ITALY will need to stay at the top of the standings with 4 more qualifying matches to qualify automatically to the finals.
if they finish in 2nd place, they have to qualify for the two legged European play-off as one of the 8 best European group runners-up & the winner of this play-off will also qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals.

I use the wikipedia article entitled 2010 FIFA world cup qualification.
So far Netherlands, Australia, Japan, both North and South Korea have qualified, and South Africa are automatically in as hosts.
Italy is in a group with Ireland, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Montenegro and Goergia, and whoever tops that group gets through, and you might still make it if you come second. So far Italy is leading the group, so it is very likely Italy will qualify.
