Over the last five or so years, we’ve seen the popularity of England’s Premier League explode in America. At the same time the English institution that is the FA Cup — the longest running soccer competition in the world — hasn’t exactly gained the same traction stateside.
Last year Yanks had a reason to take interest in the competition when U.S. No. 1 Tim Howard helped lead Everton into the finals at Wembley Stadium, eventually falling to Chelsea 2-1 last May.
Any chance for that kind of repeat performance took a hit Saturday when Everton, which now also boasts American midfielder Landon Donovan in its squad, lost 2-1 at home to Birmingham City in the fourth round of the competition.
