The fight for control of Liverpool, one of international soccer’s iconic clubs, has become a trans-Atlantic legal war.
Over the past day-and-a-half, judges in London and Dallas have approved, held up and thrown into question the sale of Liverpool to the owners of the Boston Red Sox, whose $476 million bid for the club was approved by Liverpool’s board of directors.
But the club’s current owners, American executives Tom Hicks and George Gillett, have vigorously opposed the sale — as well as a Wednesday ruling by a UK judge that unequivocally sanctioned the deal — even though they signed documents handing over control of the sale to the board (and chairman Martin Broughton, above left).
