I am doing research on the news the media is portraying of South Africa around the world. I need to find out whether that news will have a detrimental effect on SA hosting the World Cup 2010 and if the obstacles hindering South Africa’s development (such as crime) deter prospective visitors?

Many people seem to forget that South Africa has already held 2 extremely successful world cups already, sure soccer is bigger than rugby and cricket, but I see no reason why it wont be a resounding success. Already stadiums are being built and upgraded, transport systems improved etc. Judging by South Africas current tourism boom people dont seem to be deterred too much.

I am sure you will get the ” Proudly South African” brigade bombard you with their delusionary views of South Africa. The Country has many beauty spots and places worth visiting but unfortunately it is just too risky to visit many of these places. In fact it is unsafe in most of South Africa as the daily news reports reveal. The 2010 World Cup is going to be an absolute haven for the criminals unless some serious inroads are made into the out of control crime. An international news team are planning a visit to South Africa to make a documentary on the crime situation which is beginning to attract World attention. I read in news reports today that a Tourist Board spokesman has acknowledged that crime in SA is a factor in staging the World Cup. Other news reports tell of Somalian refugees in the Cape wanting to flee the Country because of the crime and that in itself says plenty. Make no mistake the majority of South Africans are good, law abiding people and very friendly and helpful. All they want is the right to live their lives without being in constant fear of being murdered, raped, robbed etc. I would guess that FIFA are more than worried about the continuous reports from South Africa about violent crime as well as other reports from Germany etc indicating that they are entirely frustrated in their attempts to assist the South Africans as they get nowhere. There have been recent reports in the Scotsman and the Daily Telegraph on the crime in SA and how that is affecting their ability to host the World Cup. Rumour has it that Australia is on standby and it may be that the situation in 1986 ,when Colombia were scheduled to host the event had it taken away from them at the last minute and the Tournament was played in Mexico, will be repeated. For the sake of South Africa one hopes that this does not happen but on the other hand FIFA cannot sacrifice lives for the sake of a football match. I don’t think anything will deter prospective visitors - sad as it is - purely becuause people are so dedicated to the sport.
I would very much like to think however that such a prestigious comepetiton in such a deprived part of the world may aid its development and draw more attention to the struggle it is undergoing.

  5. vicki_ho Says:

yes it will be a success.
When this country realises what hosting this world cup will entail and pulls together it will be a roaring success.
The crime will not be an issue because the police force, the military and the hundreds of security personal will all be working together.
