U.S. national team and Chivas USA defender Jonathan Bornstein, who wound up earning a surprising number of minutes at the World Cup in South Africa, will leave Major League Soccer over the winter to join Mexican club Tigers UANL, which is based in Monterrey.
Bornstein is one of only four players on the 23-man World Cup team who plays in MLS. The others are Landon Donovan, whose future is the subject of constant speculation, his L.A. Galaxy teammate Edson Buddle, and Real Salt Lake’s Robbie Findley. Many more started their career in the American league, however — 13 additional members of U.S. team played in MLS before heading abroad. The Chivas captain will be the next, joining Pachuca’s Herculez Gomez and José Francisco Torres in the Primera División.
Chivas will play Pachuca on Wednesday in the final group match of this year’s SuperLiga tournament, which pits four MLS qualifiers against four Mexican clubs.
“When the season ends, I’m excited to join Tigres and ready for all the changes that will come with the move. It will be a big moment for me and I’m looking forward to it,” Bornstein said, adding that he’s “focused on finishing this season with Chivas USA.”
That season likely will end early — Chivas is in last place in MLS’s Western Conference at 4-9-2, although it’s through to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals (Sept. 1 against Seattle).
