An early goal from an unlikely source and a stunning goalkeeping display from a gimpy Kevin Hartman helped FC Dallas secure a spot in next week’s MLS Western Conference final with a scrappy 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night.
The result lifted visiting Dallas to a 3-2 aggregate victory over the reigning league champions in the two-game series, and its first MLS semifinal appearance since 1999.
Midfielder Dax McCarty was the first hero of the night for Dallas, scoring in the 17th-minute and putting RSL in two-goal hole. A desperate Salt Lake was all over the visitors in the second half and clawed its way back into the series with a strike from Robbie Findley in the 80th, but, despite relentless pressure, it couldn’t find the goal that would force overtime.
