PHILADELPHIA — The players on the expansion Philadelphia Union are going to be spoiled. They played their first game together before more than 36,000 fans at Seattle’s Qwest Field. The Union’s home debut last weekend featured an appearance by Vice President Joe Biden. Nearly 35,000 saw them defeat D.C. United, 3-2, thanks to a Sebastien Le Toux hat trick. On Thursday evening, Philly will play the third game in club history at Toronto FC before a sellout crowd and national TV audience ( 7PM, ESPN2).
It’s not always going to be this way, of course. MLS is far from the point where every game is going to draw that kind of attention. There are some anonymous fixtures ahead. But based on what FanHouse observed at Lincoln Financial Field last Saturday, the Union is on the right track to ensure that it joins Seattle and Toronto as expansion success stories. It is a club that hours before its home debut, already had been embraced by the fans.
