Jose Mourinho ran across the Camp Nou field with his index fingers raised toward the opposing fans in celebration, a defiant gesture from a master tactician whose Inter Milan team ended Barcelona’s stay atop the soccer world with an outstanding defensive display in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League semifinal decider.
Barcelona goalie Victor Valdes took exception to Mourinho’s display and angrily confronted the Portuguese coach, but the real damage was done. Inter’s 3-1 win last week, along with a resolute effort during a second leg in which they played with 10 men for more than hour, was enough to overcome Gerard Pique’s late goal for the hosts and a desperate final flurry conjured by Xavi Hernandez and Lionel Messi.
Inter’s 1-0 loss, and 3-2 win on aggregate, will see them advance to the final for the first time since 1972. It will play four-time winner Bayern Munich, which eliminated Lyon on Tuesday, on May 22 in Madrid.
