The burly central defender, who left Belgium’s Standard Liège in 2009 in an ambitious but ultimately ill-fated move to AC Milan, has reunited with former coach Michel Preud’homme at FC Twente, the reigning Dutch champions.

The loan deal, rumored for several days (The Washington Post broke the story), was confirmed by Twente on Tuesday morning. It will last through the end of the current season. Onyewu, 28, is under contract with Milan until the summer of 2013.

The move to the Netherlands could not have come at a better time for Onyewu, who has barely played since suffering a knee injury in October 2009. He played once for Milan a couple of weeks before getting hurt — about half an hour of reserve duty in a UEFA Champions League group stage game — and hasn’t stepped on a field wearing the famous black-and-red stripes since.
