Tonya Antonucci spent four years working to establish and launch Women’s Professional Soccer, and then another two years as commissioner. Now the former Stanford star and Yahoo! executive has less than one week to go before handing over the reins.
Whether or not she’s been successful really is a matter of perspective. On one hand, the league exists. There is women’s pro soccer in the United States. On Thursday night, in fact, the Boston Breakers will host the expansion Philadelphia Independence in a semifinal. It’s even on TV (Fox Soccer Channel, 8 PM ET).
On the other hand, the ship is slowly sinking. Two franchises have folded since WPS concluded its inaugural season one year ago, and both losses were painful. The first to go was the Los Angeles Sol, the league’s only high-profile team. The Sol dissolved in January when a potential investor backed out at the last minute. Even more damaging was the mid-season failure of St. Louis Athletica, which rattled investor confidence throughout the league and signaled the beginning of the end for Antonucci.
