After weeks, months and even years of speculation, the axe finally fell on Rafa Benitez at Liverpool on Thursday. Or more specifically the Spanish coach fell on his on sword and agreed to walk away — alone — from Anfield.
Immediately it’s unclear how much money it took from Liverpool to get Benitez to walk away. Reports on Wednesday had the club offering him a £3 million ($4.3 U.S.) to walk away from his contract, which still had £16 million remaining on it.
Early favorites for replacing Benitez include Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill and Fulham’s Roy Hodgson.
