For certain segments of U.S. soccer fans, Giuseppe Rossi remains a very sore subject.
The New Jersey-born former Manchester United player opted at a very early age to play internationally for the land of his parents — Italy — instead of the U.S. This issue obviously came to the forefront last summer when Rossi played in Italy’s victory over the U.S. at the Confederations Cup. (A recent cover story in ESPN the Magazine certainly re-opened these wounds.)
So Tuesday it was a bit interesting — if not coincidental — to see that Rossi was the only foreign-based played in Italy coach Marcelo Lippi’s initial 30-man roster for next month’s World Cup.
