The New York Red Bulls are paying more than $11 million combined in annual wages to new designated player signings Thierry Henry and Rafa Márquez, according to figures released by the MLS Players Union, and now have three of the five highest earners in the league on their roster.
Henry’s figure of $5.6 million (sorry, $5.6 million and four cents) is even higher than the $4.5 million reported earlier this week, while Márquez will pull down $5.544 million per year. The fact that the Mexican’s salary is about equal with Henry’s is somewhat surprising and is an indication of just how much the club expects him to produce both on the field (results) and off (attracting more Hispanic fans).
They are the second- and third-highest paid players in the league behind David Beckham’s $6.5 million (and four cents). Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Ángel is now a distant fifth in MLS and third on his own team at $1.918 million per season. Landon Donovan remains the most well-compensated American player at $2.128 million.
