MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (Reuters) - Rookie pitcher Zach Stewart flirted with a rare perfect game before settling for a one-hit victory in the Chicago White Sox’s 4-0 triumph over Minnesota on Monday.
The 24-year-old Stewart, making just his eighth career start, took a perfect game into the eighth inning, where Twins third baseman Danny Valencia hit a lead-off double to ruin the streak of perfection.
Stewart recovered from the disappointment with six straight outs to complete a magical effort that included nine strikeouts.
