The San Jose Earthquakes weren’t on many lists of potential playoff contenders eight months ago.
The club finished last in MLS’s Western Conference in 2009 and tied for the worst record in the league the prior year, when they rejoined the league as an expansion club following a two-year hiatus. The climb to the 2010 postseason for coach Frank Yallop and Co. seemed steep.
“When we first came back into the league, I think everybody, including maybe even myself, thought it would be quite easy to make the playoffs,” Yallop told FanHouse. “It’s not. This is a very difficult league.”
It’s a league made easier when you have a go-to goal scorer, but those are hard to come by. The reason the Quakes weren’t named among those lists of preseason favorites was because nobody saw their goal scorer coming.
Like his team, Chris Wondolowski has come from nowhere. He had scored four league goals in his five years in MLS entering this season.
Now, with just two games and one week left in the 2010 regular season, the Earthquakes (12-7-9) have locked up playoff spot and could finish as high as fifth in the overall standings. And Wondolowski is in the MVP mix with an astonishing 14 goals.
